Word nerds and puzzle fiends unite

Waaaaaay back in the day I worked at a publishing company with my dear friend Caroline Smith. Together, we could complete the cryptic crossword puzzle in Business Day – and usually did – during our lunch hour. Neither of us could do it by ourselves, and we never managed to do it quicker than our boss, Robin Emslie, who would it all by himself. AND he did it in pen! Boy, did that irk us.

Caroline and I also shared a flat, and on Sunday mornings we would tackle the Sunday Times “Everyone’s crossword” together.

Some 20 years later, we found ourselves working together again. Still, even after all those years, we could only finish the BD crossword if we worked on it together during our lunch break. Occasionally I’ll buy the Sunday Times (purely for the crossword, of course), but I never manage to do the whole thing. Caroline and I clearly need to spend more time together.

Recently, Carel introduced me to the SEQUEL crossword puzzle. He receives it regularly from his brother’s step-father-in-law, Bruce Stoneman, who lives in the UK and makes a puzzle every week. Download the latest puzzle in PDF format. Let me know on colin@cnandco.com if you want more.

I’m also a very keen Scrabble player online. I play on the Facebook Scrabble app. Look me up (search for donfrolic) if you’d like to play a game or two. If you can figure out why I use the screen name “donfrolic” then we should definitely have a game of Scrabble.
