Tips for the golf enthusiast travelling to Mauritius

Mauritius boasts a surprisingly high number of golf courses which are situated all over the island, ranging from your basic 9-hole courses, to 18-hole championship courses. I was lucky enough to play at the beautiful Tamarina golf course which is situated at the foot of the Rempart mountain on the west coast of the island, and a quick 25-minute taxi drive from the 5-trident Club Med La Plantation d’Albion resort.

I put a few helpful tips together on booking and playing golf while staying at the resort.

When is the best time of year to play golf in Mauritius?

Well, if you are an avid golfer, all the time is the best time. Luckily, there really isn’t a bad time to go to Mauritius with its tropical climate and year-round sunshine. But, to avoid rainy days and cyclones, I don’t recommend you go between January and March.

If golf is your thing, and island holidays are on the radar, be sure to book at one of the all-inclusive Club Med resorts.

How many courses are there on the island?

There are 12 golf courses on the island, some more prestigious and challenging than others. There are courses along the coast which offer you great views of the sea; the more inland courses allow you to play in the tropical greenery Mauritius has to offer.

Club Med has a preferred list of golf courses which you can easily book at the excursion office.

How do I book my round?

Club Med really make it so easy! There is a dedicated team that handles all the excursions, including golf, and the team has a list of preferred courses. These include Tamarina, Anahita, Ile Aux Cerfs, Bellemare and Mont Choisy. Club Med will arrange green fees, cart, and transport to and from the course. By booking through the excursion office you can meet with a member of the excursion team, then arrive at reception in time for your taxi and sit back and enjoy the local villages and stunning scenery as you head to the course.

Is there a golf course at Club Med?

There is a “mashie course” and you can take daily golf lessons with a pro. So, don’t forget to book a lesson before your game for some helpful tips.

Do I need to bring golf clubs?

No. If you don’t want to lug your clubs around, you can hire a set of highquality clubs directly with the golf course for an additional fee. Don’t forget to bring your own golf glove and some balls. Remember though, Air Mauritius – a preferred airline for Club Med in Mauritius – do not charge you for carrying a set of clubs.

What must my family / partner do while I play golf?

This is the beauty of Club Med, there is just so much to do at the resort and if there was a championship golf course you really wouldn’t have to leave. Your family will be left in the capable hands of the resort GOs (resort team). There are daily activities for the family and thrilling activities throughout the day. Snorkelling, learning to trapeze, volleyball, standup paddleboarding, sailing, yoga, water aerobics and football, are a few of the activities. There is also a dedicated kids club for children aged 17 and under. Of course, just grabbing some sun at the infinity pool and enjoying the beautiful scenery of the turquoise ocean is also not a bad idea.
