John M Chu directs Crazy Rich Asians

TED Talk Tuesday #149: The pride and power of representation in film.

Watching TED Talks is a popular pastime at CN&CO. We visit TED.com regularly to clear our heads, have a laugh, or get inspired. TED Talks open our minds, spark new ways of thinking, and can lead to some very interesting conversations. Each week we pick a favourite and publish it on a Tuesday, because we like how “TED Talk Tuesday” sounds. This week’s talk was posted by Gianluca. Here’s why…

Because it’s inspired by the world of cinema, it’s about being creative, kind, passionate and reinforces why family should always come first.

It’s no secret that I am a big fan of and inspired by movies and theatre. Whether it’s a classic, a modern tale or a documentary, I am always up for a watch.

I am particularly fascinated by the way stories are created and how they capture the different happenings and moments around us.

Over the last year, inspiring director Jon M. Chu (Step Up 2, Now You See Me 2) put together the romantic and fun comedy called Crazy Rich Asians.

With a quirky title, it’s a movie inspired by Kevin Kwan’s novel of the same name and has an all-Asian cast. The film is fun and brilliant, it’s about love and family, jealous societies, diverse characters and is set in the amazing city of Singapore – a city where the CN&CO team spent a day and night in in 2018 en-route to Club Med Bintan.

In April 2019, John delivered the inspiring TedTalk below. He touches on how his passion for creating and film was inspired by his upbringing and family. His stories and insights reinforce how the power of connections (especially with today’s connected age) and on-screen representation are able to bring people together, to laugh, to be kind, to love which above all are the things we need to secure a better future for us all.

Enjoy the talk and if you haven’t done so yet, be sure to watch Crazy Rich Asians – you won’t be disappointed!

Gianluca brings a touch of Italian flair to everything he does. His eye for detail, superior organisational skills and rare ability to nag relentlessly (in the nicest possible way) help to keep the team on track and on target. Say good things to him about Juventus and you’ll have a friend for life.
