TED Talk Tuesday #134: What do we do with all this big data?

Watching TED Talks is a popular pastime at CN&CO. We visit TED.com regularly to clear our heads, have a laugh or get inspired. TED Talks open our minds, spark new ways of thinking and can lead to some very interesting conversations. Each week we pick a favourite and publish it on a Tuesday, because we like how “TED Talk Tuesday” sounds. This week’s was selected by our Joshua Nuttall and here’s why he chose it.

I am a data nerd.

If you know me, you won’t be surprised by this statement. I thoroughly enjoy unpacking the data that we are producing on a daily basis in our ever-evolving world. As we become increasingly connected we are leaving a greater digital trace, pieces of a bigger puzzle.

As the amount of data points in the world increase we need to be far smarter in how we visualise and analyse it. Machine learning and AI have a pivotal role to play in the development of data analytics. Through deep data analysis we can drive better decision making. We do however need to be conscious of the context and our own interpretations when we are analysing data. The bottom line is that we need to think more.

I found this TED Talk most interesting and if you would like to geek out or chat about all things data related, drop me an email (joshua@cnandco.com).

Watch this surprisingly moving talk, Susan Etlinger explains why, as we receive more and more data, we need to deepen our critical thinking skills. Because it’s hard to move beyond counting things to really understanding them.
