It’s fascinating how the world works, the decisions we take, and the way we approach different things depending on how they framed. During my time at varsity, one of my majors was Environmental and Geographical Science, over three years we covered wide ranging topics and one of them was sustainability.
Sustainability is broadly defined as “avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance”, when you use the dictionary provided by Google. While, correct this definition doesn’t cover all the elements of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Sustainable Development Goals are a collection of 17 global goals set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 for the year 2030.
I have been fascinated by the environment and sustainability since my high school years, largely due to a legendary Geography teacher. Today, I have the opportunity to work with a few leading brands who are making it easier for us to contribute to our combined future.
In this TED Talk Audrey Choi explores the question of, “Can global capital markets become catalysts for social change?”.
“Passion and clarity”, two words the Audrey asks us use when we frame our thinking around the contribution that we can make towards a sustainable future. I strongly agree with the emphasis on clarity, we need platforms to enable us to live more conscious lives and education to help drive knowledge of what is possible. Fortunately, businesses like Imagined Earth and Brownie Points are leading the change in South Africa. Visit the Imagined Earth website to find out more how
It’s time for us to open our eyes, we all have a role to play in our future. Let’s think about sustainable investing and about our future.
