TED Talk Tuesday #108: 3 questions to ask yourself about everything you do | Stacey Abrams

Watching TED Talks is a popular pastime at CN&CO. We visit TED.com regularly to clear our heads, have a laugh or get inspired. TED Talks open our minds, spark new ways of thinking and can lead to some very interesting conversations. Each week we pick a favourite and publish it on a Tuesday, because we like how “TED Talk Tuesday” sounds. This week’s talk was posted by CN&CO events guru Rikus Kok.

This is such an inspiring talk by Stacey Abrams. We all face difficult situations in our lives. These can be different for everyone. From handeling a difficult situation at work or like the one Stacey talks about where her family was invited to a prestigious event and was judged on arrival by the transport they were using. They were told that it was an invite only event and that they didn’t belong there. The memory of that day sparked something in Stacey to go out and make a change for the better.

Stacey’s first attempt wasn’t a success, but she was determined and the following words she said in the talk inspired me to always work hard for what I want in life: “Always move forwards because backwards isn’t an option, and standing still is not enough…”

The three questions are relevant for everything you do in life:

1: What do you want? – You must know what you want or what you want to do, without knowing this you won’t be able to start and go in the right direction at all.

2 Why do I want it? – There should always be a good reason why you want to do something. And like Stacey says ” Even though it feels good, revenge is not a good reason”

3 How do I get it? – Put a plan together that will make you succeed in what you want to achieve

My wish for everyone is to go out and not be afraid about the changes that you want to make. Don’t let money, fear or any other obstacles stand in the way to prevent you from succeeding in whatever that may be.

And lastly do it with attitude…

Talented in music and the arts, Rikus not only has the voice, but also a natural eye for events. His attention to detail, organisational skills and ability to keep things moving are unique. He is also a people’s person and is always ready to embrace the festivities and the dance floor!
