Stories of an African Choir – Transforming Lives Through Music

The choristers and staff of the Mzansi Youth Choir are true South African heroes – most definitely not of the unsung variety! Since the choir was formed in 2003, hundreds of young people have passed through its ranks. Some have gone on to perform at international level, while others have launched impressive careers both within and outside of the arts. What they all have in common is a sense of discipline and commitment that is instilled in every single chorister at every single practice. Here they don’t only learn songs. They also learn all about collaboration and respect, perseverance and patience, listening and sharing.

The choir itself has achieved amazing international acclaim, having performed across South Africa, as well as in Canada, Denmark, Russia, Turkey and the United Kingdom. The choir has also been a popular attraction at many of RMB’s Starlight Classics concerts.

Late last year, a group of choristers spent 10 days in London, performing at various events, and representing Africa at the inaugural International Youth Choir Festival at the Royal Albert Hall.

CN&CO’s partners at RMB are associated with the Mzansi Youth Choir, and announced a formal sponsorship in early 2018.

“By providing support in many forms we are making a significant, positive contribution to South Africa’s creative economy, both directly and indirectly,” says RMB’s Carolynne Waterhouse. “And as we all know, storytelling is a key enabler of creative citizenry.”
