South Africa rowers are off to the final Olympic qualifiers

CN&CO is proud to partner with Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) on several PR and comms projects, including the PR for the RMB National Rowing Squad, which the bank sponsors along with other rowing initiatives in the country. We played a small role – at our first ConFab – in bringing RMB and the sport of rowing together when then RMB’s Carolynne Waterhouse met Paolo Cavalieri of rowing management company Team Powerhouse Trust – to form a mutually beneficial and lasting partnership.

The RMB National Squad has already qualified the men’s heavyweight pair for the Tokyo Olympics. However they are as determined as ever to qualify more boats.

The RMB National Squad recently returned back home to South Africa from a three-week high-altitude training camp in Lesotho. This camp served as the final preparation for the World Rowing Final Olympic Qualifying Regatta, which take places in Lucerne from 15 – 17 May.

Roger Barrow, the National Squad coach, says, “The team has had its ups and downs, but overall the crew have kept a positive outlook on what they can do and where they can be their best.”

Leading up to the regatta in May, all eyes will be on the men’s heavyweight four and women’s lightweight double scull.

Men’s Heavyweight Four:

Lawrence Brittain, Kyle Schoonbee, John Smith and Sandro Torrente

Lightweight Women’s Double Scull:

Kirsten McCann and Nicole van Wyk.
