South African start-ups in the spot light

It’s exciting to see the development in the start-up environment in South Africa and the recognition that some of these companies are getting on the global stage.

Scrolling through my twitter feed, I came across an article titled “9 amazing start-ups from Johannesburg to watch”. It was published by a platform called Silicon Republic and while the name might make you think that they are based in Silicon Valley in California, they are actually based in Ireland.

Silicon Republic are a platform that share Sci-tech news, insights and opinions. They have been around since 2001 and have been voted Ireland’s best science & technology website 7 times. They provide coverage of the Fintech, IoT, Blockchain, AI, and Future of Work spaces.

While all the start-ups featured in the article are on a fascinating, innovative and disruptive journey, two of the featured companies, Pineapple and Investsure stood out for me. One of the reasons they stood out was because I had seen them featured on CN&CO’s new On The Couch video interview series.

The first On The Couch episode featured Marnus van Heerden, one of the founding member of Pineapple. The founding members set out to reinvent the way insurance is done with an entirely new business model.

The second On The Couch episode featured a catch-up with Mbulelo Mpofana from the insuretech startup and world-first insurance product Investsure, which offers investors insurance on their investments.
