IN THE SADDLE: Twitter is the modern-day newspaper

Joshua Nuttall is part of the marketing team at Purple Group, a CN&CO client. He uses his IN THE SADDLE column on our blog to share the thoughts that pop into his head while he’s out riding his bicycle…

With so much news out there and so much to know these days where does one begin? How to take it all in and make sure you not ready too much fake news…

I have always liked to stay up to date with the happenings around me. When I entered into the workplace this took a new meaning. I immersed myself completely, and ended up being bombarded with information. I felt it would be better to have too much than too little.

I subscribed to daily financial newsletters from Moneyweb, Business Day, and Biznews to name a few. I logged on to different websites to check the latest headlines and any recent development. Looking back on it now, I could have done it slightly differently! Everything is always so clear in hindsight, isn’t it?

So what do I do differently now to ensure I don’t feel overwhelmed by the amount of information that’s out there?

Well, for starters, I have unsubscribed from the things that I don’t need. Planning a bit never hurt!

This sure helped trim down my unread emails and meant that I actually began my day by reading the news rather than just ignoring it.

I also started to use Twitter a lot more. I have never been a massive reader – reading is a skill that still needs to be developed – so I enjoy skimming over things to get a brief summary and thern clicking to read more if something really interests me. Thus, Twitter is my go-to spot for staying up to date.

Roughly two years ago, while attending one of CN&CO’s social media courses, Gianlucca referred to Twitter as “the modern-day newspaper”. I couldn’t have summed it up better.

It’s important to stay up to date with what’s going on in the world around you. So, find out what works best for you. Plan a little so you don’t make the rookie error and get bombarded like me. Best of all? Open a Twitter account, if you don’t have one, and start by following people/accounts that you know. Before you know it you will be part of the Twittersphere and contributing in your small way to the world’s “largest online newspaper”.
