Podcasts: Learning and Reflecting

Podcasts are booming.

Global monthly podcast listener figures are forecast to grow more than six-fold, from 287 million in 2016 to 1.85 billion in 2023, according to the Ovum research company Ovum

I am extremely bullish on the future of this medium for content delivery. Podcasts open up doors and allow us to learn from leading thinkers that we may never get to meet face to face. I have learnt many lessons from listening to podcasts and look forward to discovering new insights as this year unfolds. The longer form and unedited podcasts, more conversational in nature, are my favourite as they allow one to become fully immersed in the discussion. Highly edited podcasts do have a place and are great if you want to grab key take-aways and are pressed for time.

Here are a few personal learnings from 2019 on how to approach future interactions and opportunities.

-It’s important to be aware of what is going on around you, links, opportunities and focus areas. You will be surprised by what you can learn from actively listening.

-You have the ability to make a choice and being clear on areas that you want to grow in—this doesn’t mean saying no to opportunities, it just means that one needs to evaluate the options that are available or potentially on offer.

-Planning—how, when, why, what. Planning doesn’t mean that one needs to be ridged or can’t change. It is important to have a rough short term framework in place and this can be very beneficial when change comes along because it means you can adapt.

-Back yourself and think—we don’t know everything or have all the skills, but have confidence in your ability to learn. Be prepared to learn and work with those around you so that you can leverage the skills that they have to produce a better outcome for clients.

I have spent a lot of time reading and learning about mindfulness. Having meditated for just over 12 months now, I am only at the tip of the ice berg with much more to learn. If you want to learn more about consciousness, check out Sam Harris and his Waking Up app.
