Podcasts and thinking. Just being out there.

Podcast: Where to next in the world of AI?

Artificial intelligence. (AI) will play a big role (even more than it does now) in our future. You may not be aware of how quickly this space is growing and how much it as changed over the last few years. As a computer’s processing power increases, the more data they can process… we are moving closer to the possibilities that are promised by quantum computing.

Last week I shared a blog where I asked the question, “What role will artificial intelligence play in our future?”. It’s worth watching the live debate in the blog, two tech luminaries share their views on the topic.

Today AI is far more prevalent in our everyday lives than you may think at a first glance. If you stop to think about all the digital touch points we have, you should start to connect the dots. From Facebook recommending photos that we may be in to Siri on your iPhone learning to recognise your voice and searching for the answer to the question you ask it.

We are producing more data now than we have ever produced before and there is a reason data is referred to as the new oil. As the data sets we are collating grows, we need computers with greater processing power to help us process the data so that we can analyse it and make sense of it. In short giving us the space to fully apply our minds and think…

If you want to learn more about this space you can read insights into Deep Learning, Alpha Go and DeepMind taking on StarCraft.

With this in mind, have you ever stopped to think about the scale of anything? For example the size of the universe or the distance between planets? Or maybe it’s thinking about the size of the global financial system? During the course of the last week, I came across a Vimeo video titled “To Scale: The Solar System” while scrolling through Twitter. Watching this video made me think about how the scale of things can be altered by the perspective in which we approach or look at them – the analogy of “from someone else’s shoes” may ring a bell.

So, those are some thoughts to ponder over the coming week and next time you use voice command to activate your phone pay closer attention.

With the future of artificial intelligence on my mind, here’s a quote that made me consider where to next…

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” Walt Disney
