Playing bowls with Insurance mates

The Annual Andy Jack memorial bowls days hosted by Jack & Seach Insurance brokers took place on a beautiful day in Joburg.

The early snap of autumn that we have experienced the last week or so did not rear its head as the sun was out in full force. Thankfully, J&S provided us with beautiful fedora hats for protection.

The day is organised every year to honour their founder, Andy Jack. And instead of the usual golf day, they decided many years ago to honour Andy by allowing those with all skill levels to participate in the event, hence the bowls day.

And all levels of all skill were on display as we witnessed those that knew how to handle the bowls and those that did not pay attention in the briefing on which side to have the bias (weighting) for the direction of swing they wanted. Often, we saw bowls from other lanes entering the neighbours. Fines were handed out for these.

The day saw many familiar faces form the Insurance industry as J&S invited their product suppliers. Leppard Underwriting, Horizon Underwriting Managers, Lombard Commercial, Global Choices, SHA and Hollard were there.

I was fortunate enough to be invited by Global Choices. It was Kyndra Robertson and Ronald Gall from GC, myself and Solani Baloyi, the Rand Regional Manager of the FIA.

Our foursome did not do well, although we had a few moments of brilliance, which we can chalk up to luck more than skill. We also had other things on our minds as we were discussing Ronald’s upcoming IronMan. We were also enjoying the delicious Gin bar that Leppard Underwriters had organised for the day. With Rose infused G&T, Blueberry G&T and gin & ginger ale with naartjie infusion to keep our taste buds going, there was little chance of our game getting better.  This was a hit with all in attendance.

With the winners of the round robin section progressing to the semis and finals, those that had been eliminated watched from the deck of the Pirate Bowls clubhouse before ending the day with a delicious meal and prize-giving.
