In Silva with Dineke van der Walt

On Thursday, 23 August 2018 the Kalashnikovv Gallery in Braamfontein hosted the opening of In Silva, a curated exhibition by Dineke van der Walt. Dineke is the winner of the 2018 Suzanne Shaw Creative Award.

Started in 2017, the Suzanne Shaw Creative Award honours the late Fulcrum employee Suzanne Shaw who loved the arts and was taken suddenly in a motor vehicle accident a few days before the opening of her own show in 2015. The award gives an up-and-coming artist or curator the opportunity to curate an exhibition according to a theme of their choosing.

In Silva means ‘in the forest’. I imagine it as a place where almost everything – or anything – is possible. So, the forest, in stories, usually tends to be somewhat dangerous but, it can also be quite transformational,” said Dineke at the exhibition opening.

In Silva shows off the talents of 10 artists: Allen Laing, Anastasia Pather, Diane Victor, Gina Waldman, Jaco van Schalkwyk, Maja Maljević, Mandy Coppes-Martin, Richard (Specs) Ndimande, Rosemarie Marriott and Tsoku Maela. Their pieces include sculptures, paintings, installations and more.

The show was brought together by the Fulcrum Group, the Kalashnikovv Gallery, Bag Factory and Business and Arts South Africa (BASA). Over 100 guests attended the exhibition opening, with a number of art students and art enthusiast visiting the exhibition as it opened to the public later that evening.

We’ve included photos of a few of the art pieces below; to see the rest, visit In Silva which is on show at the Kalashnikovv gallery until 1 September.
