I wish someone had told me I would miss the nest

“I wish someone had told me” is a series of posts that feed into our inquisitive nature at CN&CO. Each week we hear from someone in our network about something interesting or surprising that’s recently happened or occurred to them – or lessons they learnt. These blogs are a way to pay it forward and form part of CN&CO’s belief that the world can be a better place – and we all have a responsibility to make it so. This week’s post is by Neo Matsei.

November 2019 marks a good two-years since I moved out of home. I was incredibly excited to begin this new chapter of my life and I must say, it’s been a great journey, but not without some need to adult of course.

It’s actually quite crazy how life is moving fast and furious. While you are learning and growing, and your future is being molded, a lot is changing and you ask yourself, how the F%$# did we get here? So once I moved out it was like holy crap, now what?

Don’t get me wrong here, the perks of moving are great – newfound independence, the sweet freedom, your own space and…and…and – but needless to say, I’m still in mourning for the routine I once had before and a time when my only huge responsibility was making sure I got good grades. And as much as I thought I was old and independent then, as life has presented to me, that too was a joke.

A few weeks after moving into the new pozi I could barely keep a plant alive, because I had forgotten to water it on a few occasions, so the dream of having a beautiful patio with plants was short lived.

Then when I caught a cold during winter, I couldn’t believe that I had to try and stay in bed to nurse myself and also make sure I had something to eat.

I make sure to visit home for the weekend and this just further highlights the familiar things I still long for that only dearest mom can provide, such as the hearty home-cooked meals. As much as I try to copy mom’s recipes, the food doesn’t quite come out the same.

When you move out to your own place, reality kicks in…

Groceries

I hate grocery shopping, but as it requires, a girl has got to eat. Who thought choosing what you’d like to eat would be so difficult.  After two-years of living independently, I still don’t know how to do it. Guys, sometimes there is not even a budget for a tub of ice-cream.

Bills

When you’re living with your parents, you’re less familiar with the burden of bills. Those debit order notifications that come through at the end of the month and the need to draw up a strict budget and actually remember to stick to it takes some responsibility.

Home repairs

You’ll miss having everything working. When my lightbulb died, at first I bought the wrong size and when I was ready to change it, it was then that I realised that I do not have a ladder.

Doing laundry

Who has the time to sort out their clothing according to colour coordination? Well, lets just say you don’t want to find out what happens when you don’t do it that way.

It’s tough, but everyone figures it out eventually 🙂
