I WISH SOMEONE HAD TOLD ME: Podcasts are really awesome

I wish someone had told me…” is a series of posts that serve as a handy guide for anyone who’s looking to do a “first time” experience, be it travelling to a destination or taking part in a running race, music festival or whatever strikes your fancy. Read below for the inside scoop.

Wikipedia tells us that a podcast is “… an episodic series of digital audio files which a user can subscribe to so that new episodes are automatically downloaded via web syndication to the user’s own local computer, mobile application, or portable media player.” Sho, and here I thought it was an easy way to choose what I listen to 🙂

There are literally hundreds of thousands of podcasts around. Thousands of South Africans listen to a variety and in America more people already do so than read. If you haven’t yet latched on to the trend, now’s your chance.

Not only have I launched a weekly podcast with my mate and CN&CO partner, Kurt Solomon, our first one has as our guest Steven Boykey Sidley – whose latest novel “Free Association” features a Los Angeles podcaster and his Zulu producer (our producer, btw, is Rikus Kok, another CN&CO partner).

Our podcast, for now is nameless, but can be accessed via the CN&CO Soundcloud account – it’s free and easy to listen to. Like most things we do, the podcast will be made up as we go along – so we promise it will get better! As a start, a few principles:

  • One week I will take the lead, the next week Kurt will
  • Each episode will be about 30 minutes long
  • Every subject is interesting and we want to showcase our diverse lives – in gratitude for our opportunities and to help make and foster links and opportunities
  • We welcome input
  • Expect serious, sport, literature, laughter, tears, politics, economics, art, cars, dogs, education, gold, how to sell a car, riding a quadbike, where to get great pizza in Burkina Faso and so on

Oh, and this week’s podcast features a little music from the great Runaway Train Cult band, so be sure to support them. And buy Boykey’s book. It’s relevant. Fun. Funny. Serious. And only R150 via penny@cnandco.com.

Happy listening!
