SARS and tax compliance

Fully Compliant Payroll Tax Employers

On Monday the 23rd of March 2020, CN&CO along with other companies who are fully compliant Payroll Tax Employers, received a communication from the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) thanked compliant companies for the example they set in complying with payroll tax obligations.

Compliant companies who practice consistency in filing monthly and annual payroll tax returns and making payment on time play a vital role in the smooth administration of the tax system of our country. Personal Income Tax represents the bulk of contributions to the State in the form of taxes, which makes businesses role as a collector of payroll taxes a very important part of SARS daily business activities.

We chatted to our CFO, Rob Christian, about the role that SARS plays for South Africa.

Whenever the word “tax” is mentioned in South Africa, most people tend to use the opportunity to find something to complain about. Yet our tax system, and the body charged with implementing it (SARS if you didn’t know) is one of the most robust systems in the world, when implemented properly.

Recovering from the effects of mismanagement SARS is once again proving to be a valuable state body which ensures businesses and individuals play their part in ensuring the country continues to run. Without SARS, the infrastructure that exists in SA today would not be possible, making the covid-19 lockdown a completely different ordeal that we will undergo.

So, as CN&CO, we are happy to play our small part in the machine that is SARS and taxes, and encourage everyone else to do the same.

As President Ramaphosa said in his speech on 23 March, 2020,

“I call on all of us, one and all, to play our part’. Would be good to keep those words in mind, even when we aren’t facing a pandemic the likes of which we have never seen in our lifetimes.”

We wish SARS all the best as they continue to rebuild!
