Freedom on #FreedomDay2020

Freedom.

“Freedom, generally, is having the ability to act or change without constraint. Something is “free” if it can change easily and is not constrained in its present state.” A definition taken from Wikipedia and it touches on how freedom is more than just physical movement.

As we celebrate and remember this iconic day in South Africa’s history, it is rather ironic that we are under lock down and dealing with a global health crisis. Our movement may be constrained and times are indeed tough, but as a country we have a phenomenal power when we unite.

This got me thinking about how we define freedom – being able to think independently and contribute to change in different ways is also a large part of being free.

The world is changing, timelines are being compressed and we are all needing to adapt.

Well known artist, Travis Scott launched team up with Fortnite (an online game planned by over 78 million people) last week to launch his latest track Astronomical. A radically different experience to what we have come to expect from artists launching their latest tracks – showcasing awesome creativity and thinking differently within current constraints. It does though allow us to imagined a world of virtual concerts and pushes our ambitious boundaries.

Today we see how, thanks to technology, we are able to unite, share expereinces and stand together to celebrate Freedom Day. The #AnthemChallengeRSA, sees over 1000 South Africans perform our Anthem – physically distance but socially connected.

While we may not be able to commemorate Freedom Day together this year, I encourage you to connect with one another virtually. Being free is so much more than just being able to move freely and in an unconstrained manner. Artists have a unique way in portraying things and the #AnthemChallengeRSA reminds us of the energy we can gain from experiencing diversity.

After all, we are #InThisTogether and stronger when we unite to build a better future.
