#AnthemChallengeRSA sounds the call to sing together

Remember when we were all invited to sing together in the CN&CO/Freshly Minced Chorus in February? Seems so much time has passed since then, yet it was just over five weeks ago. We’ve entered a different age.

But just because we’re in lockdown doesn’t mean we can’t still sing together. The marvels of modern technology have made it possible for a group of SA celebs to sing the national anthem in unison… and the rest of the nation has been called on to join in. The project is called #AnthemChallengeRSA.

The celebrity video features, among others, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Zolani Mahola, KB Mamosadi, Moonchild, Busiswa, Proverb and Tumi Morake. It also features Darren Hayward of Freshly Minced and James Bassingthwaighte of the Mzansi Youth Choir. Both Darren and James have strong links to RMB through Starlight Classics, Darren as director and James as a leader of the aforementioned choir, one of Starlight’s regular acts.

The call to come together has been sounded for South Africans to join the #AnthemChallengeRSA. The hope is to get 1 000 individuals to perform the largest-ever virtual rendition of the national anthem, while in lockdown.

Let your voice be heard

If you’d like to be part of the 1 000 anthem singers, follow this link. The directions are very clear and specific. You should be able to figure them out easily. And the words are all spelt out in the video for those who aren’t sure of them. Once you’re recorded your virtuoso performance, upload it to Dropbox before midnight on Monday, 6 April 2020.

We will follow the story and publish the results right here on the CN&CO blog.

If you enjoy singing and would like to be part of this amazingly inclusive project, now is your chance! Start warming up those vocal cords and give it a go.
