Women’s day, a day well-spent

The day I had anticipated for so long had finally arrived. I took part in the 5 km Totalsports Women Race, in a fight against breast cancer. This race took place across three cities, Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. At first I was nervous about partaking as I knew I was not physically fit to enter, but when I learnt the race was to raise breast cancer awareness, I knew I had to do it. Not just for those diagnosed but all future and potential and recovering ladies. This was the women’s way of showing support. Breast cancer can happen to anyone, which is why we had to take a stand and become part of the movement to continue to raise awareness.

The race was not easy, but it was fun. Pink was the colour of the day and everyone cheered each other on along the way. We all had one goal, and that was to get to the finish line. It was a moment of victory when I finally did.

The day did not end there, however. After the race we took part in an aerobics class, which was my favourite part of the day, mainly because I didn’t have to run anymore! Music was pumping and all the ladies (and gents) brought their “sexy on”. We also had a guest appearance, Reason, one of South Africa’s Hip Hop musicians, whom gave us a reason to stick around and party some more afterwards.

To end off the day, the PinkDrive, a Breast Cancer educational and fundraising NGO and partners and friends of CN&CO, gave us insight on breast cancer awareness. We were given a lesson on how we can examine ourselves for breast cancer and we learnt that men too get breast cancer.

This movement showed that as women, individually we are strong, but together we make an even more powerful force. On that note, a belated happy women’s month to all women, young and old. You’re beautiful, you’re worthy and don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise!

One of the great things about working at CN&CO is that we are big supporters of anyone who takes it upon themselves to help give cancer the middle finger. We have been inspired by the fighting spirit of the warrior-survivors, such as Conn Bertish who featured at one of our Confab sesssions earlier this year. Carel Nolte, our “chief señor”, also threw his support behind the PinkDrive when he took part in the Comrades’ marathon in 2015 and 2016, collectively raising over R300 000 for the charity. The entire company also took part in the IIG Charity Spinathon earlier this year as well, having chosen PinkDrive to be their hour benefactor. Big or small, everyone can make a difference and I am proud to say I made mine yesterday.
