Small bites for small kids

With Youth Day fast approaching and June being Youth Month in South Africa, the Thai Africa Restaurant Group will proudly be doing their part not just to raise awareness around an iconic day in South African history, but an initiative that will give back to the youth of South Africa to encourage ongoing development.

Youth Day, 16 June is the day that honours the deaths of many Soweto school children that lost their lives as they joined the wave of anti-Apartheid sentiment within the student community and marched to Orlando Stadium in defense of their rights. The Soweto Uprising, known to us as Youth Day is a day in 1976 that changed the course of South Africa’s history.

In commemoration of the young lives lost, Kong Cedar Square, Orient Melrose, Wangthai Sandton and So Yum Hyde Park have aligned themselves with Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy for the month of June in order to make a difference.

Who are Thandulwazi?

Annually over 2700 historically disadvantaged South African students and teachers, working in under-resourced schools across Gauteng and Limpopo, benefit from the educational programmes facilitated by the Thandulwazi Maths & Science Academy.

Now that is making an impact, that’s Ubuntu in action!

The
Thandulwazi Maths & Science Academy is a nation-building educational programme, which recognises that education is a gift for life. By giving a greater number of young people access to quality education, you are providing them with the knowledge and skills needed to become active and contributing members of the broader South African community and economy. Effective, well trained, professional teachers play a critical role if this goal is to be achieved.

The Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy was established by the St Stithians Foundation in 2005 out of the need for effective action in addressing the critical issues pertaining to the teaching and learning of Maths and Science in schools in Gauteng. Annually, Thandulwazi provides targeted interventions aimed at training new teachers; professional development for current educators; curriculum enrichment and quality extra tuition for highschool students on Saturdays; and academic scholarships for talented students. The programmes are hosted at St Stithians College and funded by donations from individuals and corporate partners.

This year;

  • 1151 high school students (Grades 9-12) from over 150 high schools across Gauteng are attending the Thandulwazi Saturday School, held over 30 sessions.
  • 962 Gauteng teachers and principals, and 400 Limpopo educators from rural schools have registered for the Thandulwazi Teacher Development programmes facilitated over 11 Saturdays in these regions.
  • 40 Thandulwazi Intern-Teachers are completing pre-service, mentored training in the St Stithians schools; and
  • Four gifted young learners have been awarded academic scholarships to complete their FET phase of schooling at St Stithians College.

Now that is inspiring excellence. That is making a world of difference in education!
